Community Based Decentralized Composting in Dhaka

Waste Concern for the first time in Dhaka (Bangladesh) initiated a pilot community based decentralized composting project in 1995 and since then the project is in operation. The main objective of this research project is to evaluate the technical and economic viability of community based decentralized aerobic composting. With support from the Regional Urban Development Office (RUDO), New Delhi of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in 1998 Waste Concern increased the capacity of the community based waste management project from 1ton/day to 3 ton/day.

Other components of the project include

  • Preparation of Training Manual on Solid Waste Management with Emphasis on Recycling, Resource Recovery for Municipalities, NGOs, & Private Sector
  • Imparting Training to Municipal / NGO Staff on Solid Waste Management, Recycling, Resource Recovery with Emphasis on Community Based Waste Management
  • Awareness Raising on Solid Waste Management, Resource Recovery & Recycling
  • Publication of Newsletter on Solid Waste Management & Recycling
