Seminar On Unlocking Mitigation Potential Through Renewable Energy Technologies in Bangladesh

A seminar on Unlocking Mitigation Potential Through Renewable Energy Technologies in Bangladesh was held on June 5, 2008 at the Osmany Memorial Auditorium. This seminar was organized jointly by Waste Concern, Grameen Shakti, Rahimafrooz Renewable Energy Ltd and Department of Environment (DOE), Government of Bangladesh. More than hundred participants from different government organizations, NGOs, international agencies, private sector, universities, financial institutions, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) along with journalists from national dailies and TV channels participated in the seminar. Chairman of National Board of Revenue Mr. Mohammed Abdul Mazid was present as the Chief Guest while Joint Secretary of Ministry of Environment and Forests Mr. Mohammad Qamar Munir chaired the session. Md. Abdus Samad, Director, Department of Environment, Mr. A.H.Md.Maqsood Sinha, Executive Director, Waste Concern and Mr. Feroz Rahim, Managing Director, Rahimafrooz were also present in the seminar. Three papers were presented in the seminar. Mr. Iftekhar Enayetullah, Director of Waste Concern presented a paper on Global Carbon Market and CDM Potential in Bangladesh?, while Ms. Nadia Afroz Rahim, Business Development Manger of Rahimafrooz Renewable Energy Ltd, presented a paper on ?Problems and Prospects of Renewable Energy Technology in Bangladesh and Dr. M.S. Islam, Head Department of International Cooperation and Development of Grameen Shakti presented a paper on Experience of Grameen Shakti with Renewable Energy Projects. The seminar concluded with the recommendation that renewable energy projects should be implemented harnessing Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) to benefit the poor as well as to reduce the green house gas emission in the country. It also suggested to provide tax incentives as well soft loan to promote renewable energy technologies in the country.
